In general, the highest concentration of black runs in La Plagne is to be found up in the glacier sector and also over the back of Becoin in the bowl behind the Montalbert sector. While the runs here are quite testing, they all share a very similar gradient to one another – apart from Étroits at the head of the valley. Also, another difference between Étroits and most other blacks in this area is this run requires the Crêtes poma for access.

Getting off at the top of Crêtes, head straight forward along the short path which leads to both the Gavotte red and Étroits itself. At the ridgeline, drop right (Gavotte is straight on) onto another relatively long traverse until you reach near the centre of the bowl, avoiding the cliffs under the traverse line.

While it is steep, in truth, there’s nothing hugely challenging about the Étroits run – well, not for riders used to tougher blacks in other resorts anyway. There are also better challenges to be had out of bounds very nearby (you’lll need to get a La Plagne guide). At the bottom, the piste flattens out considerably into a pathway where Coqs, Morbleu and Palsembleu pistes also feed in from skier’s right.

The run then joins the Halles blue back to the base of the Adrets chair and Envers chair. Note, all the blacks in this sector are marked as ‘Natur’, meaning they remain unpisted. Consequently, the bumps can get fearsome later in the season.

Pros
  • Fantastic scenery
  • Great after fresh snow
  • Feels more backcountry than perhaps any other run in La Plagne
Cons
  • Long traverse to access the main route
  • The bottom section of this run is super flat – and goes on forever
  • If you lose speed at the bottom, you will be unclipping / poling out
