La Plagne glacier changes – update
As you’ll probably be aware, big changes are afoot for La Plagne ski or snowboard holidays in the 2022/23 season when skiers and snowboarders in La Plagne will be able to take advantage of the considerable investments the resort is making in its glacier lift tech and access.
As we’ve reported already on LaPlagne360 work started in summer 2021 to replace the old Bellecôte glacier gondola which accesses the Bellecôte glacier sector of the resort however more details have come to light of late on this ambitious project – plus further details of the plan to replace the Roche de Mio gondola.
As you can see from the image below, the new La Plagne glacier gondola route follows roughly the same path as the previous lift, then deviates considerably to the left up to an altitude of 3000m where there will be a new viewing platform with a spectacular vista across the other Vanoise Park glaciers.

Meanwhile, the existing lifts on the Glacier de la Chiauppe will be dismantled – with the hope of limiting the impact of skiing and snowboarding in this fragile habitat and returning it to nature.
The new La Plagne glacier gondola stations
As you might expect, the resort isn’t simply updating the lifts – the stations will also receive a full redesign too to improve comfort and aesthetics as well as access. As anyone who has been to La Plagne before, the mid-station at Col de la Chiaupe was hopelessly outdated and often resulted in something nearing a scrum at the end of the day to get onto the last lifts back.
As you can see below, the new redesign of each of the stations look thoroughly more modern and more in keeping with what you’d expect of La Plagne’s stature and reputation.

We have another video and post showing the work on La Plagne’s glacier sector including the widening of the La Combe red piste – as well as evidence of the work done to date already. This new lift will offer amazing views over Les Arcs and Mont Blanc and will be sure to be one another one of the spots in the resort for the best scenery in La Plagne – plus there’s little doubt this lift will also qualify in the best scenic lifts category.
There is also talk of the Roche de Mio gondola being replaced in time for winter 2024/25 as part of the overall improvement plans to access these vital and important sectors in La Plagne’s skiing and snowboarding.
