The new Roche de Mio gondola

As many of you will be aware, La Plagne has finally decided to replace the ancient Roche de Mio gondola which previously ran from Plagne Bellecôte to Belle Plagne and then onwards to summit of Roche de Mio. This aging lift had been in service for more than 40 years and was a constant bottleneck in La Plagne’s lift network for many years. The new Roche de Mio gondola will address this – and it’ll also take a considerably different route. This work schedule also compliments the considerable changes made to the La Plagne glacier area and glacier revamp. It is also part of a concerted effort tto improve the lift network in La Plagne which has seen new work on the Lovatière high-speed chair.

Progress of the new Roche de Mio gondola

Construction work started on the new Roche de Mio gondola before the winter’s snow had even melted and has since progressed rapidly. As well as the new base station, there will also be a new top station with a midpoint now arriving near the top of the current Col de Forcle drag lift. You can see images of the new midstation below.

The new Roche de Mio gondola route

As mentioned above, the new Roche de Mio gondola will take an entirely different route to the previous lift – and one that is considerably more practical. The base station will remain in much the same place, but will lift riders directly up to a new midstation at Col de Forcle. This is much better both for summer and winter access as it will give access to pistes and mountain bike tracks that will give options to drop directly over to Champagny, back to Bellecôte or stay on the lift to the summit of RdM. It will also provide another, much quicker route for those staying in Plagne Centre to access Roche de Mio by taking the Funiplagne then Petite Rochette down to the new midstation.

It’s worth noting the lower section of the previous Roche de Mio gondola – which was technically called Belle Plagne – will still remain to allow late-night access between the stations of Plagne Bellecôte and Belle Plagne.
