At just under 1km in length, the Montchavin piste Pelées black run isn’t exactly the longest expert piste in the world. However, taken as a whole along with the Pierres Blanches blue at the top and joining the Mont Blanc blue at the bottom, it can make for quite an interesting route through the Montchavin sector.

Access is off a fairly well-hidden drop-off from the Pierres Blanches a little way after the run turns back to the left. You’ll see a gap in the trees on the right – though it’s not particularly well sign-posted so you do need to be aware to avoid missing it. The start of this black is pretty shallow before the run turns to the left and it starts to get steeper. However, even then, this really isn’t the steepest of blacks and the real challenge normally comes from the bumps rather than the gradient.

Pelées is another La Plagne’s runs marked as ‘Natur’, meaning it doesn’t get pisted. Consequently, the moguls get bigger and bigger the longer the season progresses. At the bottom, you can either take the Pierres Blanches chair back up or continue onto the Mont Blanc blue. In fresh snow, you’re often better heading into the trees near the top of this run to get a steeper gradient and more rewarding ride to try some of the most easily-accessed La Plagne off-piste. Note – you should always hire a La Plagne guide when doing any off-piste riding.

  • Great tree riding nearby
  • Great in bad weather
  • Good alternative to Mt Blanc for advanced riders
Cons
  • Quite short
  • Moguls can get huge
  • Another ‘Natur’ unpisted run
