Just like the Frisbee (Mercédès) black off the neighbouring Les Verdons summit, the Rochette piste features a steep top section before mellowing considerably into a long run-out. It would be optimistic to grade the second part much more than a blue – meaning the real challenge of this run really only lasts for the steep face.

The Rochette is also treated by the resort as a ‘Natur’ piste, meaning it remains unpisted throughout the season. Consequently, bumps build and can get enormous towards the tail end of the year.

The run is accessed off the Funiplagne – take a left at the top and double back on the lift line along the side of the top station. The run then steepens as it turns right before shallowing considerably as it turns to the left, back to Plagne Centre. The run-out is enjoyable – though certainly nowhere near deserving of its black grading.

At the bottom, you can join the Capella blue – both of which feed directly back down to Centre and the Funiplagne. However, if steep challenges are your thing, you’d be much better advised getting a guide and go exploring. The in-bounds area of La Plagne doesn’t have much in the way of testing terrain – however, if you know where to go, the out-of-bounds areas have some of the most challenging descents in the Alps.

Pros
  • Steep – at the top

Cons
  • Bottom 2/3 very flat for a black
  • Moguls are hardest part
  • V irregular bumps
  • Don’t attempt if it’s icy
