The Montchavin piste Esselet red run is a great excursion through the trees which branches off the Pierres Blanches blue piste in the Montchavin sector of La Plagne. The turnoff is quite easy to miss but, once you’re on this run, you’re on it to the end as there are no other intersections before it eventually joins the Route des Bauches blue at the bottom.

As it’s quite isolated, the Esselet run never gets busy and is a joy to ride in bad weather or after fresh snow. Actually, the only bad point with this piste comes when it joins the very flat Route des Bauches. As it’s another of La Plagne’s ‘Natur’ runs (unpisted), expect bumps – particularly later in the season.

Pros
  • Great tree run
  • Almost always quiet
  • Off the beaten track
  • Easy access off-piste
  • Great in fresh snow
Cons
  • Very easy to miss start
  • Inconvenient to get back
  • Flat run-out (Route des Bauches)
