The aging Bellecôte glacier lift Bellecôte gondola liked the main area and Roche de Mio with the imposing glacier area over a 3km, 13-and-a-half minute journey. This lift was completely revamped for the 2023/24 season and has now been replaced by the vastly superior and much quicker Télécabine des glaciers.

As part of a total reimagining of La Plagne’s glacier sector, the operating company (SAP) have ripped out two other lifts in the high Alpine (the Traversée and Glacier lifts) and instead placed their main focus on the left side of the piste map. These moves have also involved scrapping the two previous pistes in this area – the Déversoir and Chiaupe.

The new gondola follows roughly the same path as its predecessor to a new middle station before veering to the left. The new top station is close to where the old Traversée used to terminate. This means that access to the famed Bellecôte North Face is much quicker (you need a La Plagne guide for this area) – although, it does of course mean that the glacier operations are now far more restricted.

Previously a summer ski destination

La Plagne used to offer reasonable skiing in its glacier area but the snow has been retreating for many years – as has the icepack. These days, there are mere patches of ice remaining in the summer months so there was little point keeping this area in its previous state. Also, due to the retreating icepack, there has been significant ground movement which was making the old chairs unsafe. Today, La Plagne’s ‘glacier’ is a glacier in name only. Nonetheless, going up here offers some of the best views in La Plagne.

Note: with the exception of the Frête blue, all the runs in this area are either marked black or red – and many remain unpisted – so the riding here really is reserved for better skiers and snowboarders. If your skills aren’t up to that, you can always ride the gondola back down after admiring the exceptional views over Trois Vallées, the Isère valley and Mont Blanc far in the distance.

Pros
  • Accesses the glacier
  • Great views
Cons
  • Despite a planned opening of December 2023, the lift has been plagued with issues
